Opened by the hair icons Anthony Mascolo of Toni & Guy and Nick Irwin Creative Director of Tigi.
Yazz Hairdressing Academy is a dynamic vocational training organisation specialising in high-quality apprenticeships in hairdressing and barbering. Our realistic, work-based programs, facilitated by a dedicated team of Academy Educators, prioritise apprentice progress and achievements.

She is passionate about shaping the future of hairdressing, Mel empowers emerging talents at the academy, embodying a fusion of artistry, education, and lifelong commitment to the craft.

LEVEL 2 FOR HAIR PROFESSIONALS – APPRENTICESHIPS IN BARBERING
The Level 2 Diploma in Barbering for Hair Professionals covers a range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge to prepare students for entry into the barbering industry.
COURSE OUTLINE
A barbering apprenticeship is one of the finest ways of training to become a barber. Apart from it being an earn while you learn route, because all apprentices are employed from day one, you will develop real, practical and commercial skills highly valued by employers. You will attend the academy one day per week and work within a barber’s salon as an apprentice for the remainder of your working week.
COURSE DURATION – STARTS IN JANUARY OR SEPTEMBER
- Level 2 in Barbering : up to 18 months
COURSE CONTENT
- Consultation
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
- Style and finish men’s hair
- Cut facial hair into shape
- Shaving Services
You will also be given a real insight into the Barbering Industry to include what employers will expect from you and how important it is to sustain your employment so you can progress further in this exciting and innovative career.
ASSESSMENT
During the course a portfolio of evidence will be collected, by students/tutors for each unit. Assessments will consist of observed practical evidence, knowledge and understanding questions and one-line exams. A practical end point assessment like a trade test will be carried out by an independent examiner at the end of the qualification.
WAGE
From 1st October 2010, a National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices was introduced for trainees aged 16-18. The rate is currently £6.40 per hour due to a recent increase in April 2022 but may vary on age at the start of the course. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the apprenticeship. You will work a minimum of 30 hours a week (Maximum 40 hours a week/8 hours a day if under the age of 18) with 20 days paid holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays. At present, a grant of up to £1,000 is available for salons accommodating our students but may change (subject to meeting requirements).
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Preferred Level 4 or above in English and Maths
- 16+ years of age
- Limited places available for 19 years+
All students will need to find a placement in a hair salon for the term of the apprenticeship for 30 -32 hours per week before they are eligible to start the Apprenticeship course. Guidance with this will be provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
On successful completion of your barbering apprenticeship framework, you will have achieved qualifications in:
- City & Guilds Level 2 Barbering Diploma for Hair Professionals
- Level 1/2 Functional skills in English
- Level 1/2 Functional skills in Maths
- A Barbering Intermediate Apprenticeship Framework Completion Certificate
You will also have a good understanding of Employment Rights and Responsibilities and you will have further developed your personal learning and thinking skills. Best of all you will be a competent junior barber, with a record of sustainable employment in the industry, all of which will mean you are a highly valued asset to the barbering profession.

LEVEL 2 – APPRENTICESHIPS IN HAIRDRESSING
Students will complete the Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals within 22 months with an opportunity for successful candidates to progress to Level 3 Hairdressing.
COURSE OUTLINE
The Level 2 Diploma for Hairdressing Professionals covers a range of practical skills and relevant theoretical knowledge to prepare students for entry into the hairdressing industry. Practical work experience will be an essential part of the course and you will already be in or seeking full time employment in an independent salon that we will work closely with allowing you to build up realistic commercial experience with progression onto Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing.
COURSE DURATION – STARTS IN JANUARY OR SEPTEMBER
- Level 2 in Hairdressing : up to 22 months (successful candidates could progress to Level 3 in Hairdressing).
COURSE CONTENT
- Consultation
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
- Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to arrange a variety of looks
- Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques

Assessments will consist of observed practical evidence, Knowledge and understanding questions and online tests. . A practical end point assessment like a trade test will be carried out by an independent examiner at the end of the qualification.

This course covers a range of practical skills and relevant theoretical knowledge to prepare you for entry into the hairdressing industry. Practical work experience will be an essential part of course and it will be especially beneficial if you are already in or seeking employment in an independent salon that we will work closely with allowing you to build up realistic commercial experience.

Course Duration : 10 weeks (every Monday)
Course Time : 10am to 4pm
Course Cost : £2500 (+ hairdressing kit cost)

ASSESSMENT
Your educator will assess you continually on both the practical work you undertake and also theory. At the end of the course you will be presented with Yazz Hairdressing Certificate of Achievement. During the course a portfolio of evidence will be collected by students for assessment.

ONE DAY PRIVATE COURSE – HAIRDRESSING
Introduction to hairdressing.
Are you undecided about your career? Come along and find out about a barbering/hairdressing apprenticeship with our taster evening.
COURSE OUTLINE
An introduction to hairdressing which gives you an insight into both men’s and women’s hairdressing as a career. This course will include:
- Introduction to Yazz Academy
- An overview to what the Academy can offer in terms of becoming a hairdresser/barber.
- What progression routes are offered?
- An insight into industry apprenticeships.
- Question and answer session.
- Skill Building Session
- Students will learn how to blow dry hair and style hair and then shown how to create hair ups for all occasions, using different techniques and equipment
- Freestyle Session
- Students will showcase skills and techniques they have learnt.
- Students will complete two different looks for two different occasions.
- Students will present their models and discuss how they achieved the styles.
- Discussion and feedback session.

If your son or daughter chooses a career in hairdressing an apprenticeship is the most common training route. They’ll be gaining real, paid work experience in a salon whilst they learn. Your child will be working in a salon for four days per week and attending training at our Yazz Hairdressing Academy in Leeds one day per week.
THE ACADEMY
Yazz Hairdressing Academy is a private training provider. We take great pride in the selection and training of our staff in order to ensure your child is safe and educated to the highest standard. This includes CRB checks and references, a practical safeguarding policy and stringent health and safety rules.
Our staff are highly qualified and continue to work in salons, and attending training themselves, as well as training apprentices in order to be able to provide students with the most up-to-date information and techniques. Throughout the duration of your child’s apprenticeship we will invite you to information evenings and communicate with you regularly to keep you informed of progress and other important information. We operate an open-door policy, so should you have any issues or concerns you can come and discuss them with us directly.
AFTER YOUR APPRENTICESHIP
The majority of the apprentices we train go on to be offered full-time employment – often in the salon they have been training in. It doesn’t stop there though; apprenticeships give students the opportunity to progress onto other courses, such as barbering or other tailored courses, or onto the NVQ LEVEL 3 advanced apprenticeship at our Academy. You can also move on to roles that can take them all over the world!

Yazz Hair started as a small salon 19 years ago, since then we have expanded to three salons across Leeds and we’re proud to say that some of the original staff members are still with us today.
We strongly believe education is key to building a successful business that is always moving forwards and on top of the latest trends, technology and techniques. So much so that we employ a full-time, in-house educator who supports our trainees and ensures that all staff are up-to-date.
Our award winning team regularly attends seminars and often visits the TIGI academies in London and Manchester. We also host TIGI seminars at our salon in Leeds three times a year.
WHAT WE DO BEFORE WORKING WITH YOU
It is essential that our students receive the best training in order for them to become great hairdressing professionals. We are committed to providing quality training and we expect the same standard from the salons we work with too.
The first step is for a Yazz Hairdressing Academy representative to visit your salon and discuss with you in depth what Apprenticeships involve and your role and responsibility in the process. We will assess the health and safety of your salon through a risk assessment and make suggestions for changes needed where necessary.
In return we expect the salons we work with to be committed to providing the best possible training, including a thorough induction into the workplace, allowing time to attend the academy once a week, providing training opportunities in the salon where students can put their new skills into practice and allocating time for reviews and mentoring sessions too. We will of course be on hand to support and advise you should you need us.
We enjoy a great relationship with all of the salons we work with and we are always on the look out for more.

LEVEL 2 FOR HAIR PROFESSIONALS – APPRENTICESHIPS IN BARBERING
The Level 2 Diploma in Barbering for Hair Professionals covers a range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge to prepare students for entry into the barbering industry.
COURSE OUTLINE
A barbering apprenticeship is one of the finest ways of training to become a barber. Apart from it being an earn while you learn route, because all apprentices are employed from day one, you will develop real, practical and commercial skills highly valued by employers. You will attend the academy one day per week and work within a barber’s salon as an apprentice for the remainder of your working week.
COURSE DURATION
- Level 2 in Barbering : up to 18 months
COURSE CONTENT
- Professionalism and values
- Behaviours and communication
- Safe working practices
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
- Style and finish men’s hair
- Cut facial hair into shape

You will also be given a real insight into the Barbering Industry to include what employers will expect from you and how important it is to sustain your employment so you can progress further in this exciting and innovative career.
ASSESSMENT
During the course a portfolio of evidence will be collected, by students/tutors for each unit. Assessments will consist of observed practical evidence, knowledge and understanding questions and one-line exams. A practical end point assessment like a trade test will be carried out by an independent examiner at the end of the qualification.
WAGE
From 1st October 2010, a National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices was introduced for trainees aged 16-18. The rate is currently £6.40 per hour due to a recent increase in April 2022 but may vary on age at the start of the course. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the apprenticeship. You will work a minimum of 30 hours a week (Maximum 40 hours a week/8 hours a day if under the age of 18) with 20 days paid holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays. At present, a grant of up to £1,000 is available for salons accommodating our students but may change (subject to meeting requirements)
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Preferred Level 4 or above in English and Maths
- 16+ years of age
- Limited places available for 19 years+
All students will need to find a placement in a hair salon for the term of the apprenticeship for 30 -32 hours per week before they are eligible to start the Apprenticeship course. Guidance with this will be provided.

Students will complete the Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals within 22months with an opportunity for successful candidates to progress to Level 3 Hairdressing.

The Level 2 Diploma for Hairdressing Professionals covers a range of practical skills and relevant theoretical knowledge to prepare students for entry into the hairdressing industry. Practical work experience will be an essential part of the course and you will already be in or seeking full time employment in an independent salon that we will work closely with allowing you to build up realistic commercial experience with progression onto Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing.
COURSE DURATION – STARTS IN JANUARY OR SEPTEMBER

This short Barbering Course is suitable for beginners and for Stylists who want to take the art of cutting men’s hair to a more advanced level.

Specifically designed to provide students with an intensive 5 week course, in which they will learn the necessary practical and theoretical skills to either work in a barber shop, or become a freelance men’s hairdresser at a higher level.

For this course, there is no entry requirements. An introductory hairdressing kit is available to buy at the start of the course.

ONE DAY PRIVATE COURSE – HAIRDRESSING
Introduction to hairdressing.

COURSE OUTLINE
An introduction to hairdressing which gives you an insight into both men’s and women’s hairdressing as a career. This course will include:
- Introduction to Yazz Academy
- An overview to what the Academy can offer in terms of becoming a hairdresser/barber.
- What progression routes are offered?
- An insight into industry apprenticeships.
- Question and answer session.
- Skill Building Session
- Students will learn how to blow dry hair and style hair and then shown how to create hair ups for all occasions, using different techniques and equipment
- Freestyle Session
- Students will showcase skills and techniques they have learnt.
- Students will complete two different looks for two different occasions.
- Students will present their models and discuss how they achieved the styles.
- Discussion and feedback session.

If your son or daughter chooses a career in hairdressing an apprenticeship is the most common training route. They’ll be gaining real, paid work experience in a salon whilst they learn. Your child will be working in a salon for four days per week and attending training at our Yazz Hairdressing Academy in Leeds one day per week.
THE ACADEMY
Yazz Hairdressing Academy is a private training provider. We take great pride in the selection and training of our staff in order to ensure your child is safe and educated to the highest standard. This includes CRB checks and references, a practical safeguarding policy and stringent health and safety rules.
Our staff are highly qualified and continue to work in salons, and attending training themselves, as well as training apprentices in order to be able to provide students with the most up-to-date information and techniques. Everyone at Yazz Hairdressing Academy is dedicated to ensuring your son/daughter receives the best training and can graduate to work in any type of salon or hairdressing role they wish to.
Throughout the duration of your child’s apprenticeship we will invite you to information evenings and communicate with you regularly to keep you informed of progress and other important information. We operate an open-door policy, so should you have any issues or concerns you can come and discuss them with us directly.
AFTER YOUR APPRENTICESHIP
The majority of the apprentices we train go on to be offered full-time employment – often in the salon they have been training in. It doesn’t stop there though; apprenticeships give students the opportunity to progress onto other courses, such as barbering or other tailored courses, or onto the NVQ LEVEL 3 advanced apprenticeship at our Academy. You can also move on to roles that can take them all over the world!

Yazz Hair started as a small salon 19 years ago, since then we have expanded to three salons across Leeds and we’re proud to say that some of the original staff members are still with us today.
We strongly believe education is key to building a successful business that is always moving forwards and on top of the latest trends, technology and techniques. So much so that we employ a full-time, in-house educator who supports our trainees and ensures that all staff are up-to-date.
Our award winning team regularly attends seminars and often visits the TIGI academies in London and Manchester. We also host TIGI seminars at our salon in Leeds three times a year.
WHAT WE DO BEFORE WORKING WITH YOU
It is essential that our students receive the best training in order for them to become great hairdressing professionals. We are committed to providing quality training and we expect the same standard from the salons we work with too.
The first step is for a Yazz Hairdressing Academy representative to visit your salon and discuss with you in depth what Apprenticeships involve and your role and responsibility in the process. We will assess the health and safety of your salon through a risk assessment and make suggestions for changes needed where necessary.
In return we expect the salons we work with to be committed to providing the best possible training, including a thorough induction into the workplace, allowing time to attend the academy once a week, providing training opportunities in the salon where students can put their new skills into practice and allocating time for reviews and mentoring sessions too. We will of course be on hand to support and advise you should you need us.
We enjoy a great relationship with all of the salons we work with and we are always on the look out for more.
